SUMMARY
Standards are ubiquitous in policies, but often less formalized than legal norms. They could inform on practices and play a significant role in the relation between policymakers and their publics. European and international organisations face huge challenges of coordination and address wide and heterogenous publics. Standards, put forward as best or at least appropriate practices, may contribute to shape the publics and to produce expectations on policymakers and publics behavior. In this way, also, controverses on politics could mirror on controverses about standards. This panel is aiming at a greater understanding of interactions between practitioners, experts and academics from the public and private sectors when dealing with international standards.
